Welcome to the November 2007 issue of the LumberJocks eMag:
From the Editor
Misery loves company - and so I'm going to share my little panic with everyone. For the past two week, the weeks of finalizing the monthly issue of our LJ eMag, I have had internet problems and I was not able to log onto the publishing site. Oh no .. panic indeed! So much to do and a giant roadblock in my way.
I, obviously, am back online and was able to finish the eMag but I have to apologize to everyone who posted information that would have been a great addition to this issue. With the multitude of posts, it is hard to keep up at the best of times, but throw in a glitch and, unfortunately, I've had to let some things slide by.
Speaking of "sliding by" - a look at the calendar reminds me that time isn't stopping, either. With only two months left to complete the Save The Children donation, with the next Woodworking Awards event fast approaching, and with the time of gift-giving just around the corner, I am feeling a little bit of pressure to find more time to get into the workshop. But, I know that it will all work out. I just need a plan and I need to make a list (Thanks to Dan for starting this list of cool gift ideas). I need to make the list and check it twice. And then, the only thing left to do is to make some sawdust!
And on that note, I'm off to the shop.
See you in the funnies!
~ Debbie
The LumberJocks
Are You a LumberJock?
For a long time, we've been discussing the characteristics of a LumberJock (see discussion initiated by Mark DeCou) ...
... and now, thanks to Dan Walters, a list of characteristics has been started that indicates if you are NOT a LumberJock.
Are you or aren't you? Only you know for sure!
Position at LumberJocks.com
LumbeJocks.com is fast becoming one of the top woodworking sites on the internet. Along with the growth of membership and activities comes the need for an income to cover the costs.
We are now looking for an Advertising Manager to contact companies regarding advertising on the site, in our eMag, and for our special events held throughout the year. The Ad Manager will receive a percentage of the advertising fees received.
Experience in Advertising is definitely an asset but not necessarily a requirement. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, email Martin at lumberjocks@gmail.com.

Woodworking For a Cause
A couple of months ago, Martin (the Founder of LumberJocks.com) proposed running a challenge that would benefit children in need, with monies raised going to "Save the Children". The idea was supported by the LumberJocks and our First Annual Philanthropy Event was organized.
There is still time to participate. The deadline for submission of funds raised is January 1st, 2008. What can you do?
- Build something and auction it off (or sell it) to raise money for children around the world who are in crisis.
- Check out the projects donated and make a bid on one.
- Print off some flyers and post them around your area.
- Put an advertisement on your website.
To find out more about this great event, see the official announcement page.
Upcoming Awards Event
Twice a year, LumberJocks.com hosts a Woodworking Awards Event. Watch for more details about how to participate and what the Awards Recipients will receive in honour of their woodworking abilities.
Categories:
Not Just Any Box – There are boxes and then there are “boxes”. Whether are you are a beginning woodworker or a skilled craftsman a box can provide a challenge to bring your woodworking skills to a new level by mixing technique with artistry. It’s time to “step out of the box” and create “not just any box”. Entries for this category are to be boxes created as a gift and the dimensions (height, width, depth) are not to exceed 18 inches / 45.72 centimeters.
Join the fun, challenge your abilities, and start building that special gift box today.
The Multi-Purposed 2×4 – One 2×4; One Project. Put your creativity and technical skills to the test by building a project from a single, eight foot long, 2×4. You can secure the pieces with glue, dowels, screws – whatever your heart desires; you can decorate it with paint, stain, or some other medium; you can add mechanical do-dads. What you can’t do is add any other building material (wood, plexiglass, sheet metal, etc.) to it. One 2×4; One Project.
We are busy arranging sponsors for this event. If you have a contact who might be interested in providing an Award Prize and advertising in our promotional material, please send the contact information to Debbie.
Upcoming Picnics
Planning a LumberJock picnic can be quick and easy or it can be a big event with workshops and rides for the kiddies. Because the LumberJocks are spread out around the world and are often up for traveling long distances to attend a picnic, it is a good idea to start planning the picnics early to give people time to adjust their schedules and their finances. The following are some of the picnic locations being considered.
Texas
Are you in the Texas area (or want to travel to Texas)? Betsy has offered to host a picnic! She is looking at possibly hosting it sometime in February. If you are interested in participating, leave a message here or send Betsy a private message.
Ontario
MsDebbieP plans to hold her second annual LumberJocks' picnic in July, 2008. If you are interested in making the jaunt to Southwestern Ontario, send MsDebbieP a private message.
Japan
Jojo has offered to host a picnic in his area and will take the visitors on a tour of the local sawmills. Heading to Kyoto? Send Jojo a private message.
Northern California
WayneC has suggested that a picnic take place in Northern California. January might be the month of the event. Check your calendars and message WayneC if you are interested.
International LumberJocks' Picnic Day
June 12th is the "International Day of the LumberJock" and was the inspiration for the first "LumberJock picnic around the world" last summer where everyone was invited to have a picnic in their own part of the world on July 15th. The same time frame for 2008 would be Sunday, July 13th.
Feature Aritcle: Wood Turning
Earlier this month, someone indicated that the world of wood-turning was lacking a forum here at the LJ Shop.
Although a specific forum isn't being created for the topic at this time, there are many resources available, through the general forums, projects, and blogs. Tips and strategies shared include information on the characteristics of different types of wood (read the information on this project by Alin Dobra), on turning dry vs wet wood, on tools, turning techniques and safety (see the discussion about spalted wood initiated by JockMike2). And, if you need inspiration, browsing through the projects posted is enough to keep you busy through to the year 2010!
What exactly is "wood turning"? It is a process of shaping wood while it is spinning at high speeds. The process dates back to ancient times, possibly originating in Egypt, although some say that it had it's beginnings later, in Britain or Italy. The tools were powered by pulling on a cord and usually involved an assistant to do this part of the process, creating the spin of the wood. From here, the development of a treadle evolved, eliminating the need for an assistant.
To see a demonstration of an early model lathe in action, you can see a video that our LJ member, Mot, found on YouTube, that was posted by robinturns. (See the blog discussion about the video here.)
Today, lathes come in all shapes and sizes, from a simple attachment of a hand drill, to the use of digital controls to select the speed of the electric machines. Equally important as the spinning of the wood are the carving tools - sharp carving tools. Sharp tools and the right speed make all the difference in the effectiveness and the enjoyment of this craft.
