From the Editors: Ask and you shall receive...

Recently, there was much talk about the LumberJocks Magazine in the forums. Then comes Debbie with her idea of publishing our own email newsletter monthly. Be careful with giving Debbie your email address if you don't want to be bombarded with lots of cool ideas each day ;) I said "That's a great idea! Do you want to help me out with it?". "Yes, yes, yes..." was Debbie's instant answer. So we have combined the newsletter idea together with the magazine one and are proud to present you the first issue of our monthly LumberJocks eMag. I believe this will be great addition to our community. Enjoy!

Note: your subscription to the LumberJocks Newsletter has been automatically converted to the LumberJocks eMag subscription.

-- Martin

This is pretty exciting! I'd like to thank Martin officially for this wonderful opportunity. In my last three jobs I was responsible for the newsletters, brochures, and other advertising projects and it is good to be back doing a similar task.

It has been fun putting together this first issue. It was like taking a walk down memory lane, even though the memories have only been from the past month. I was "wow'd" once again by the magnificent church pieces created by Mark Decou, scared by the unfinished snake by Phil Brown, intrigued by Os' "letter/cereal box openers" and carrying case, inspired by Paul's "sweating for wood", and educated by Niki who has provided a variety of tips and tricks. I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I did.

With the newsletter, we will not only walk you down the memory lane but also:

  • keep you up to date regarding challenges, contests, and awards,
  • let you know about new things on the horizon, and
  • any other little tidbit that will be of interest

We've Had a Challenge or Two...

We've Had a Challenge or Two...

... along with so much fun!!

During the month of May 2007, we wrapped up two challenges that have each been a huge success!

The Thorsen Side Table Challenge
Our first challenge was the brain-child of Obi and Karson and began two months ago.  Thanks to Popular Woodworking, we were able to offer a free, one-year,  Popular Woodworking Magazine subscription to everyone with a valid entry! Wow - was that an exciting offer !

We are looking forward to June 15th when the winning entry as well as "honorable mentions" will be announced. The winner might even have a photo of his/her project published in an upcoming issue of the PW Magazine. Good luck to everyone who entered! (Be sure to check out all the amazing entries -- all 42 of them!!!)

The Workshop Video Tour Challenge
Our second challenge was sponsored by LumberJocks.com and TheWoodWhisperer. 24 LumberJocks took up the challenge and gave us a personal tour of their "castles". We were entertained, educated, and even got to meet some family members! Congratulations to all of our winners (everyone who entered and everyone who watched the videos). Read more.

It's Very STATifying!

The prediction was set on March 9, 2007, by Obi, that membership of LumberJocks.com would hit 1000 by July 10th.

Well, here we are at the first of June (just a little over a month away from the target date) and we have climbed to 971 members.

I'd like to welcome ALL of the LJ community members and say "congratulations" to everyone for making this such a great place to be that the 1000 mark is right around the corner!!

Activity in the  community has been going well, with 1529 projects, 1129 blog entries and 480 topics posted and commented on.

Last month we paid special recognition to two of our active bloggers -- Frank for posting the most blog entries (129 and counting) and Dusty for having the longest series (42 chapters, with more to come). Again, well done you two and thank you for sharing!

Garden Project - Why waste your summer hours just sitting by the pool and smelling the roses when you can sit by the table saw and smell the sawdust instead?  But wait - it gets even better!! Now you can build that summer project AND enter this year's Summer Contest Category "Garden Theme". Set aside those water goggles and build something cool for your garden, to compete in this outdoor theme. Let the summer games begin!!

Wood Joinery
- Let's get technical -- but without glues, metal nails, screws, or other mechanical fasteners! Yes, this is the "Wood Joinery" challenge for all you LumberJocks out there. Let's see what you are made of - or, rather, what your woodworking project is made of. If you can build it with screws, then you can build it without. Pure and simple: Envision it; build it; enter it.

TAG! You're It

TAG! You're It

A click on one of the many "TAGS" and  we can quickly see a SIGN of the times!

Over the past month several "signs projects" have been posted, demonstrating a variety of talents and lovely end results:

  • Phil Brown has added a painting to his Wood sign, posted May 25, 2007, and also shared one with carving, in Carved Sign, posted May 5, 2007
  • CarverRog also shared one of his carved signs, a Commissioned Business Sign, posted May 10, 2007
There are also signs by Jim Earl and Dick Cain, from previous months.

These are but a few "sweet signs of success" !! Thanks for sharing and for using the "TAG" tool.

Doing our bit for a promotional blitz: Dress for Summer with our very own Sweet Sign of Success. (Keeping reading for more about "the bit")

Martin is contributing his "bit" by taking "$0" commission from the sale of selected T-shirts for the week of June 17th - 23rd!

So, what's YOUR little bit? Why, just go to the LJ Merchandise Store and donate the cost of a selected T-Shirt  (which will be discounted by Martin's bit of course) and receive your very own LJ T-shirt for FREE!!!! (OK, so you are really ordering a T-Shirt at a discounted rate, but the donation part really sounds good, doesn't it??

Then, wear your new LJ shirt  proudly during the summer months, promoting LumberJocks everywhere you go!

More publicity = more sponsors = more challenges = more prizes!!

(Martin will adjust the T-shirt cost during the week of June 17-23, so there's no hard calculating to do on our part.) Thanks Martin, for this generous offer.

A Blast from the Past

This project was posted a year ago, on May 28, 2006, by John.  It has been viewed 249 times in the past year!! That's a lot of looking!!

Wondering what else might be waiting for you to have a peek? Don't forget to check out the SHUFFLE feature (located in the site header).

Credo shared photos of his Shaker Style Coffee Table  including the detailed design drawing he created. It looks like as much work went into the plans as it did the project itself! Great table, Credo!

Karson shared some "how to" tips on how to plan using a story stick. Very helpful.

Gizmodyne has taken us on a "beginning to end" process of the cabinet that won 2nd place for "Beginning Cabinetmaking".

What's On Where?
