Welcome to the March 2009 issue of the LumberJocks eMag:
From The Editor
March, 2009 Issue #21
Happy Anniversary to LumberJocks.com!
February 26th, 2009 marked the 3rd Anniversary of the site. Pretty exciting stuff! When you look at the site today with its 8,000 plus members, it is hard to believe that the site is so new! The success is due entirely to two things: 1) Martin Sojka's design and support of the site and 2) its members. With such wonderful people in our LumberJocks' "shop" how can it be anything but a success!
One of the reasons for the success of the site is Martin's continued involvement with the site and the ongoing upgrades he creates, based on members' needs and requests. We just never know what is coming next to make our time here enjoyable, easy, and inspiring. Just an example of Martin's continued support is his gift to us as an anniversary/birthday gift. Photos for projects have been increased from 4 to 6! Yes, we can now post 6 pictures for each project. What a guy. Now, if you are wondering how you can give back, there are lots of options - promoting, participating, and of course making a wee donation to the site!
3 years. I'm still amazed! On behalf of all the members I would like to say, "Thank you, Martin. Thank you!"

LJ Awards & Challenges
LumberJocks' Winter Woodworking Awards - 2009
Congratulations to everyone who participated in our Winter Awards Event. I think this Awards was the hardest one yet for the voting process. Just by looking at the photos of the entries you can tell that a lot of work and thought has gone into each of the projects.
LumberJocks Connect
LumberJocks' Connect
Connecting with fellow LumberJocks to talk about local resources is just one of the many rewards of being an LJ member. Whether you want to simply connect online, meet at a local woodworking event, or perhaps even start a local woodworking club, you can use our LJ eMag to find out who is in your region! Check out the following postings and join in if you are in the area. Also, if you want to find people in your "neck of the woods" as they say, just start a posting and I'll add it to the new "LumberJocks Connect" section of our eMag.
- St. Louis
LumberJocks Meet At Wood Show. SteverKorz shared his experience at a wood show in the St. Louis area as well as a meeting with a fellow Jock! Read more here.
- San Diego CA: If you are in the area check out this discussion
(Note: even though our LumberJocks are honourable people you never know who might be lurking around our site. Please be cautious about sharing private information with others.)
Other LJ Events
Pen Turners' Swap
In case you missed it, in our last eMag, I reported that the Pen Turners' Swap box was missing. It was a sad and anxious time for us all. But good news - it has gotten back on track and is continuing its way from LumberJock to LumberJock. Read here for more information on the process.
Furniture Design Challenge
This is a great challenge for all you creative thinkers out there! How about designing a multi-purpose desk, as needed in orphanages around the world. Intrigued? Check out CelesteofThrive's posting, here.
Impromptu Sketchup Challenge
You might have missed it but check it out anyway. What's the challenge? Draw a simple table using Sketchup and time how long it takes. Read all about it here and see the entries and times.
And...
A Word On Spammers
Every once in a while spammers find our wonderful site and send out a few messages/postings to try and find some easy money. Please, please, please do not respond to these postings and messages. When you see spam let Martin or myself know and we'll get it taken care of "ASAP".
Focus On...Greene and Greene
Focus on "Greene and Greene"
Each month I spend a bit of time trying to decide what the topic of our "Focus On" feature will be. This month was no exception but once I thought about what March represents and I envisioned St. Patrick's Day and the colour green, my brain quickly jumped to woodworking and the style of "Greene and Greene". What more appropriate topic could there be?! |

Brothers Charles and Henry Greene were born in Ohio and spent much of their childhood connecting with nature. Their father enrolled them in a university program where they would learn about woodworking. This, along with their father's believe that sunlight and air circulation were key elements of a healthy home were, obviously, a great influence on their future.
Their training was in classical woodworking but as luck would have it, they happened upon a showing of Japanese architecture and were inspired. Their business would follow, culminating in the "utlimate bungalow" which would encorporate the traditional learning, the physical health elements, and the Japanese influence.
Our fellow LumberJocks have shared lots of information and links about the "Greene and Greene" brothers and architectural style. Check out these discussions: Forum Discussion and Dusty's history lesson. You can find other blogs tagged as "Greene and Greene" here and forum discussions here.
Our members also share their love for the style by creating their own pieces of "Greene and Greene" furniture and homes. A quick check on our projects tagged as "Greene and Greene" produced links to 60 different projects. Some items featured in our LJ Shop are:
