Leap year -- an extra day in February. Still, I can't believe that we are already entering the month of March!

So far, this year, we have held our Winter Awards event, kicked off our very successful Reviews feature, held two reviews-related challenges, and welcomed 1000 new members.

2008 is definitely an exciting year.

(Oh, and speaking of 29 ... somebody's birthday is just around the corner!!
Happy Birthday to me)

Other LJ Events

In Memory of Oscorner
Last month Dusty and Karson created a magnificent piece of art that would be used as a tribute to our friend Oscorner. Members were able to make a donation to LumberJocks.com (to help fund the site) and in return their name was put in the hat for a random draw for the artwork.

The recipient is "Karrie" who just happens to be Karson's daughter. How wonderful that the tribute is not only going into the hands of one of our members but also into "family". Thank you to everyone who made a donation in Oscorner's name.

Pen Turners' Swap
Several of our LumberJocks are participating in a "Pen Turners' Swap". The pens are currently travelling around North America, which each participant trading a pen for one of his/her own!
Let's watch.

LumberJocks Picnics
Throughout the year many LumberJocks get together for what have become known as "LumberJock Picnics". The following are in the plans. If you'd like to arrange a picnic in your area, just let me know and I'll post the information in the eMag. (The more notice you can give, the more opportunities people have to make arrangements.)

  • Arlington, Texas:  (POSTPONED. No date set yet.)
  • Brant County, Ontario: July 13, 2008. Host: MsDebbieP
  • Washington State: June 14 or 21, 2008. Host: chamoruboy
  • Mid-America: (to be determined).
  • your picnic listed here

LJ Awards & Challenges

Tool Review Challenge
To add a little fun to our "Leap Year" Martin presented a little challenge to members: post a review (with pictures of course) and have your name put in a draw for one of four special $29 gift certificates! With this opportunity only happening once every four years, the excitement was unsurmountable!

This little challenge obviously had everyone leaping for joy as we had almost 100 new reviews posted.

Congratulations to:
  • hops
  • sIKE
  • gizmodyne
  • rikkor
And a special congratulations to Hawgnutz, who has posted 19 reviews already! In recognition of his commitment to the site and to the reviews he will receive a LumberJocks t-shirt!

Feature Article: The Dovetail Joint

The Ins and Outs of Dovetail Joinery

What is a dovetail? It's a joinery method using interlocking pins and tails. The majestic dovetail has received lots of coverage here at the LumberJocks' Shop. We've had questions and answers,  a "dule" (the technical name for a group of doves) of projects, and many tutorials, including videos.

(box by Odie)

To create the dovetails you can choose to use hand tools or specialty dovetail jigs or, well, it almost seems that the options are endless!

There are lapped dovetails, through dovetails, and secret dovetails, (taken from the Encyclopedia of Furniture Making) and we have seen double half-blind dovetails with beautiful combinations of wood. Some dovetails are precise and uniform and other woodworkers prefer a non-typical layout.

Check our our collection of projects that have been tagged for "dovetails" and "dovetail". You will be inspired to get out in the shop and build something right away!

Need a little help? We have lots of that as well.

And don't forget to check out the video tutorials:

Where In The World Is MsDebbieP?

Shhh!  She's resting.

If you would like to be part of the Shop Tours and Inspections send a message to Douglas Bordner, or resident Tour Manager, Writer, and Designer.

Inspections are painless and we enjoy getting a peek into other people's shops!

Oh wait.... last minute wake up call!
Thanks goodness for the "Leap Year". We were able to squeeze in a shop tour before the end of the month. On February 29th, Douglas and MsDebbieP visited the shop of HansonDVM!!
Congratulations on the inspection pass, Doc!
