June 2009     Issue #24

We are fast approaching the beginning of a new season with new opportunities and projects waiting for us to tackle. Here at LumberJocks.com, as the site continues to grow and change, there are always new opportunities to learn from each other and inspiring projects to add to our lists of future endevours.

With our memberships continually growing by leaps and bounds, the wealth of knowledge and different artistic perspectives are also expanding beyond our wildest dreams! I remember that in the first year that I was a member there was almost no scrollsaw work in the projects section. Now, we have many such projects as well as blogs discussing how to use the scrollsaw to complete a variety of results. What will be coming our way in the upcoming months? We just never know. But what we do know is that it is YOUR contributions that make our site the best woodworking site online. What are those "should I" blogs that you have been considering? Well, take the chance and post them! You might inspire someone, answer someone's questions, or motivate someone else to share their experiences.

One blog leads to another, which leads to another -- and before you know it, well, one just never knows what woodworking projects are waiting out there!

LumberJocks Connect

Helping Hands
Every so often plans are made for LumberJocks to get together to meet, talk woodworking, and have a social outing together. Other times our members get together to help each other out! For example, with a little teamwork, (and by the sounds of it a lot of muscle power), ryno101 and PurpLev managed to salvage some old bowling alley flooring - a job that couldn't have been done alone. Way to go! Check out the blogs posted by ryno101 and by PurpLev.

Road Trip
Also, this past month, Karson met up with fellow LumberJocks on a little trip. How many LJ tours does this make, now, Karson?

Other LJ Events

International Day of the LumberJock
In 2007, Martin declared June 12th "International Day of the LumberJock", marking the milestone of 1,000 members. To celebrate the glorious day invite some woodworkers over for a picnic and wear your t-shirts and hats with pride. Happy IDLJ everyone :)
Is There Enough Interest?
Andy has posted a generous offer that I don't think you can refuse! If there is enough interest in the project Andy will create a tutorial on making an "Art Box". To add your name to the "yes, I am interested" list, visit his blog here.
You haven't seen one of his "Art Boxes"? Check this out -->

LJ's Mourn The Passing of Sam Maloof
It is with great sadness woodworkers receive the news that the famous Sam Maloof has passed away. His work has been an inspiration for many LJ projects.

Focus On.... Dad

Focus On... Dad
Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there and to all of our fathers and father-figures!

For many of our members, the fact that they have woodworking as part of their lives is because of their Dads. We have heard stories of fathers who have taught their children (young and old) how to build things. We've heard of members who have memories of their fathers doing woodworking but did not follow in the footsteps until they were dads themselves. And we've heard stories of members getting into woodworking because they have inherited their father's (or grandfather's) tools.

Then there are stories, such as this one told by Derrek, about working on a project together with a grandfather.  And, of course, we have the stories of our members teaching their own young children or students how to build things, passing on the passion, the skills, and the life wisdoms that come with woodworking.

Father's Day does not stop at honouring our fathers. It is also a time to acknowledge the male role-models in our lives. I'm not sure about you, but for me, there are several LJ members who I have added to my list of role-models in my life. Throughout the 450,000 comments posted on our site are those words of wisdom and inspiration that can only come from a Dad or Dad-equivalent. I think of all the times that I have been encouraged to try some new woodworking skill or have been praised for efforts that are less than successful and then been pushed to try it again. And, a success, well, it is never the end of the journey.  I can always count on someone saying, "Well done!! Now... try this!"

Over time you get to know many of our members quite well because they are in our online workshop almost every day. The regularity of their postings creates a rhythm in your life, like sitting down for a cup of coffee, with an old friend. A forum topic, started by kolwdwrkr, led us down memory lane as we remembered many of our "old friends" who, for whatever reasons, no longer post new projects or wisdom on our site. Perhaps they will return one day or maybe they won't but forever they shall be remembered for the positive impact they have had on our lives.

And so, Happy Father's Day to all the guys out there and thank you for all that you give to your own families as well as our online family here at LumberJocks.com!
