Welcome to the November 2008 issue of the LumberJocks eMag:
From The Editor
November 2008 Issue #17
For us, here in the northern regions, fall is now in full gear and many of our members have experienced the first signs of winter. The change of seasons, however, regardless of where our members live, hasn't stopped our woodworkers from getting into their shops! The site, which recently hit the 6,000 members milestone, is filled with amazing projects and blog discussions.
Every time I look over the projects posted I am in awe at the creativity, the craftsmanship, and the patience involved in each item. The variety of projects also seems to be growing, as we see more items turned, scrolled, and carved.
With all the growth that we have seen over the past few years, the one constant is the strength of the community: members are supported, regardless of their skill level and everyone is always being encouraged to challenge themselves, to try new things and develop their skills beyond the current level.
LumberJocks.com truly is the best woodworking group ever!!

LJ Awards & Challenges
Oh it's Hallowe'en Night and the Goblins are out....
2008 Hallowe'en Challenge
Well, Hallowe'en has come and gone but the goblins really were busy at our three sites: LumberJocks, GardenTenders, HomeRefurbers.
Each site was challenged to create a special Hallowe'en decoration for their home and prizes were given to random winners at each site. The prizes were generosly donated by Lee Valley Tools. A big thank you for their support!
LumberJocks.com had 13 entries and the winners were:
Congratulations and thank-you to everyone who participated.
(You can see all 13 entries here.)
Winter Awards, 2009
Yes, indeed, our Woodworking Awards are fast approaching. The categories were first announced in the October eMag. Have you started your projects?
1. A Knot Like No Other
It's creativity time! Don't let that big old knot get you down; incorporate it into a project, highlighting it's beauty or uniqueness. You can knock out the wood (if there is some) and use just the hole or keep the wood intact and include it in your design. It's time to get knotty with your woodworking. Be sure to describe how the knot inspired you.
2. A Secret Compartment
Sshhh!! It will be just our little secret -- where have you hidden that special storage compartment in your woodworking project? Whether you are building a box, a chair, or any other creation use your design and woodworking skills to add a secret compartment that no one will find unless they know it is there! This project is all about the "secret".
Watch for more information to come on this exciting event!

Focus On...Shadow Boxes
|
Focus On "Shadow Boxes"
What is a shadow box? It is an enclosed case that is designed to display 3-d memorabilia. I have seen shadow boxes hold everything from soldier's medals to baseball card collections. The special design of the box protects the items from direct sunlight by allowing the light to come in through the glass front at an angle. (I didn't know that. Thanks to Wikipedia for that piece of information.)
Many of our members have created a shadow box as a gift to a family member, gathering special memories into the creation for display. Other LumberJocks have made their own shadow boxes, to keep special items safe and, again, to display them, honouring them and the memories that the items hold.
Do you have special items packed away in a shoe box? Perhaps now is the time to build a shadow box to hold and/or display them proudly.
