Welcome to the December 2008 issue of the LumberJocks eMag:
From The Editor
December 2008 Issue #18
Happy Holidays Everyone!
'Tis the season to celebrate the gifts that we have been given: from family, to woodworking skills, and, on a more practical level, our woodworking tools and, of course, LumberJocks.com.
This past month, as always, has brought a variety of woodworking projects into our online shop, inspiring us to try new things and to finish those projects that are waiting for completion, and also have often left us wondering "how did they do that".
As we approach 6,500 members, we truly are blessed with a wide variety of talents and woodworking creations. You just never know what will be posted next especially with many people busily making gifts for friends and family.
Be sure to check out our "Biggest Online Woodworking Gallery" to see what our members have been up to in 2008.
Have fun making sawdust, everyone!

LJ Awards & Challenges
Winter Woodworking Awards, 2009
Our third annual Winter Woodworking Awards is about to begin. At this special event, where your votes select our Award Winners, we honour our members for their creativity as well as their workmanship. Along with the two categories listed below, our coveted LJ trophy will be presented to the Top Overall Woodworker, the member who receives the most combined points for the event.
1. A Knot Like No Other
It's creativity time! Don't let that big old knot get you down - incorporate it into a project, highlighting it's beauty or uniqueness. You can knock out the wood (if there is some) and use just the hole or keep the wood intact and include it in your design. It's time to get knotty with your woodworking. Be sure to describe how the knot inspired you.
2. A Secret Compartment
Sshhh!! It will be just our little secret -- where have you hidden that special storage compartment in your woodworking project? Whether you are building a box, a chair, or any other creation, use your design and woodworking skills to add a secret compartment that no one will find unless they know it is there! This project is all about the "secret".
We're busy finalizing the prize list at this time so keep an eye open for the official announcement which will be coming soon!

Pen Turners' Swap #3
Check out the latest update on the Pen Turners' Swap! A lot of work has gone into organizing this very successful event and the enthusiasm shown by the participants as well as the rest of us who are just following the adventure really shows that the work has paid off.
The event is so successful that there are rumours of other "swaps" in development. Interesting!! What will we be swapping next? And will there be a fourth pen swap in the works? I look forward to all of the challenges and other woodworking events waiting for us in 2009!
Focus On... Gift-Making
Focus On Gift-Making
December is a time of gift-giving for many people around the world and what better way to say "I care" than with something you have made with your own two hands!
Although I have many, many favourite items in our woodworking gallery, there really isn't anything that comes close to gifts created by children, such as this castle made by Natalya, for her Dad. Years of experience definitely gives a gift the "wow" factor but the love put into a project cannot be beat.
One of the favourite gifts to make this season, based on the number posted in our gallery, is the handmade cutting board, such as these by USCJeff. Over the past year we have seen many versions, including end-grain and basket-weave.
Another favourite project is a wine stopper. Here, FrankoManini, shows us one that he made in 40 minutes for a last minute request for a gift.
Other great ideas include jack-knives, (who would have thought that a $2.50 knife could look so wonderful- great job, romansfivefive), and Russel's tables. Talk about brownie points - Russel made six of these tables for ladies in the office.
Whatever you create for someone just remember: a picture may be worth a thousand words but a castle is priceless!
